Heavier
Things
John
Mayer
Our Rating: 8.5 / 10
The
new hit single, "Bigger Than My Body," is a sneak
peak into John Mayer's highly anticipated album, Heavier Things.
Although dripping with up-beat tunes, catchy lyrics, and slow
love ballads that John is famous for, his newest release is
anything but "typical" Mayer. As opposed to his last
album, Room for Squares, where Mayer seems to be looking for
love, this over-achieving 25-year-old searches for himself with
every chord and rhyme. John said himself, "This record
is as different from the last one as I am from the last time
I made a record." Heavier Things reflects Mayer's fresh
style and willingness to step into the unknown, distinguishing
him from all other singer/songwriter's of today.
Mayer
gives credit to his producer, Jack Joseph Puig, for understanding
exactly what he wanted the album to be by giving the statement,
"he understands the romance of making records." And
what a record they made! As always, Mayer gives credit where
credit is due; guest musicians such as legendary jazz trumpeter
Roy Hargrove, drummers Matt Chamberlain, Steve Jordan, percussionist
Lenny Castro, and horn player Jerry Hay all make an appearance
on the album, as do longtime bass player David LaBruyere and
keyboardist Jamie Muhoberac.
All
in all, the ingenious Mayer has done it again-catching every
emotion in a single lyric, only to leave you begging for more.
Get ready to sit back and enjoy this new, yet classic John Mayer.
