December

The Moody Blues

Our Rating: 8.5 / 10

For the first time in their illustrious career, it's Christmas time for The Moody Blues. December, the first holiday album ever recorded by the British rock legends has a rich legacy to live up to, and it delivers in every way. With a warm mix of traditional Christmas fare such as the beautifully re-worked "When A Child Is Born" and the classic "White Christmas", the album is complemented with five original compositions by Moody's Justin Hayward and John Lodge.

Of the original tracks, Hayward's "Don't Need A Reindeer" and Lodge's poignant "The Spirit of Christmas" offer the greatest glimpse into these musicians' talent and creativity. Hayward and Lodge, having written and recorded together for over 30 years, still demonstrate a willingness and desire to break new ground rather than rely on their rich history to carry them forward. It's unbelievable that these incredible musicians are not yet in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Although vocalist and flautist Ray Thomas is absent from this album, Graeme Edge, Justin Hayward and Lohn Lodge deliver another instant classic worthy of the legacy that is The Moody Blues. Go out and spread the holiday cheer, and be sure to pick up a copy of The Moody Blues' December. I can guarantee you won't be sorry.
