John Mayer - BJCC - November 19, 2003

Rating: 9.0 / 10

In saggy blue jeans and a light blue button-up shirt topped with a brown, velvet blazer, John lit up the BJCC November 19 with a fiery version of Clarity. Center stage, acoustic guitar in hand, he stunned the audience with his passion and flare as he seamlessly shifted into Why Georgia, a crowd favorite from his previous album. Next, John changed to his electric guitar to perform his new hit single, Bigger Than My Body. Surprisingly, the set included a well-balanced mix of both old favorites and new releases, making the night not only classic, but also exciting.

Although there were problems with the audio mix that caused John's voice to get lost and somewhat disappear throughout the evening's performance, the wonderful music and his stage presence alone more than made up for any technical audio problems.

As a whole, the concert was full of great music, but it was also a mini comedy show. He interacted with the audience, and made everyone feel as if they were in the home of a good friend rather than in a crowded arena. One of the highlights of the performance came when Mayer mimicked a female's responses with his guitar during My Stupid Mouth…characteristic of John's whimsical personality and style. You can sense the enthusiasm as he dances across the stage. To him, playing music is not a job, it's a passion…it's life.

Of course, the night would not have been complete if the song that started it all had not been played. After a few one-liners and musical tease, John finally delivered what the crowd had been waiting for all night; Your Body is A Wonderland. After a standing ovation, John finished off with Wheel from "Heavier Things".

Words cannot begin to describe the energy and passion of the performance, and I guarantee everyone left Birmingham in awe and satisfied. I got everything I expected…even a little more.
